Learn what it takes to be a Camp Tawonga wilderness leader! WITs learn all the skills our leaders use on every backpacking trip, including orienteering, shelter-building, wilderness first-aid, cooking and lifeguarding.
The first week, you'll enjoy your own backpacking trip in Yosemite National Park, acquiring new skills. Then you and your friends will learn the ropes of belaying and leadership on Camp Tawonga's ropes course.
Next, spend two weeks at camp using all your new skills by assisting wilderness leaders in the field on the ropes course and backpacking trips into the national forest. You'll also learn more about edible plants, fire building, and how to lead programs for younger campers.
Selection Process for Teen Leadership Programs
1. All leadership programs are competitive based on written applications and personal interviews.
2. Teens - not parents - are responsible for each step in the process.
3. Apply early because spaces are limited.
4. Applications are available now - call us at (415)543-2267 or download them here:
After submitting an application, teens must call us to make
an appointment for a personal interview. Please do this as
soon as you estimate that we have your application in the
office. Interviews begin as early as December and spaces will
fill on a rolling basis.
