Peace, Love and Tawonga

Yesterday we relived the 60s at Camp Tawonga with Tawonga Stock, our very own music and arts festival at the Moadone. Campers performed, bodies were painted, protest signs were made and the world was awash in tie-dye! Camp Tawonga was even graced with our very own Jimi Hendrix look a like! We weren’t on a field in upstate New York, but the feeling and passion of the late 60s was alive and well here at camp.

One act on the Tawonga Stock stage.

Body painting and flowers in our hair!

Comments:
Did you know Janice Joplin and her group, Big Brother and the Holding Company performed for a week or so in 1965 at Camp Tawonga? I was there!!! Nothing much went on during this week. Everyone just sat on the lawn and listened to them practice during the day and then we danced for hours at night. Janice still was not know since her first album had not yet been published. I was a camper for three summers and backpacked with "Howie" who also had a wolf as a pet. Great stuff!!! Great memories!!!

I also remember Big Brother and the Holding Company staying for a few days at Tawonga, but it was after Down On Me had already made them famous, maybe 1966. They stayed in a cabin next to what was then the Infirmary, and did one concert. Janis Joplin gave an utterly electrifying performance there in the Dining Hall. I have a picture of her at the swimming pool. What I especially recall is that she was down-to-earth and kind.
